Course Description:

Strategies for Improving Quality of Life for End Stage Dementia Patients

In this one hour presentation, Author of “Namaste Care,” Joyce Simard, MSW, will address the special needs of patients with end stage dementia. Beginning with a discussion of Alzheimer’s disease prevalence and impact on society, Ms. Simard will review the course of progressive damage to the brain to help the learners understand the development of related symptoms. The audience will learn the criteria for hospice admission and the proper use of the FAST scale in the staging of dementia.

To address the discomforts often experienced in end stage Alzheimer’s Disease, the PAINAD Pain Assessment Tool will be introduced. A discussion of benefits and burdens of various treatment options will illustrate the value of care that promotes comfort. Finally, effective strategies for improving quality of life will engage the audience in useful techniques which touch the senses of the cognitively impaired.
